The band got together for its first rehearsal last weekend, playing with our brand new keyboard player for the first time! The short story is, he is fantastic and has spent hours modeling and building the sounds and samples needed for this particular show, to the extent I don’t think anyone has in the last 27 years of the band! That is no small statement. So to say it was a great rehearsal and that we are very fired up for the shows is an understatement! As noted we are playing the full Wish You Were Here album for the first time ever, alongside familiar songs and deep cuts from all eras of Pink Floyd. Show details and links are below, and here is the first promo video. More to come!

Saturday April 6, 2024 at McDonald Theater in Eugene, Oregon - https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/7875569/floydian-slips-eugene-mcdonald-theatre

Saturday April 13, 2024 at Revolution Hall in Portland, Oregon - https://www.etix.com/ticket/p/8092560/floydian-slips-portland-revolution-hall

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HxDm5DUWLgk?si=8e91OKuVUTtl-3jy" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; The song, called “Show Me,” is available now wherever you stream or download music and I encourage you to check out the lyric video, embedded below.

The song was written by me and my musical partner, drummer David Kendall. Dave, a drummer who mucks about on guitar now and then, came up with all of the music on guitar and I did the lyrics and melody. Dave’s chords are super unorthodox (same thing happened with our song Silver from the Hearts and Reason album) so the sound is really unique (I had to write down how to play these chords because they are not anything I’d be able to figure out later). The riff is also his, and the whole outro was his idea. He called me and literally sang parts to me on the phone, which I recorded and sent to him over Dropbox. So this one was a real collaboration. Thanks, Dave! Mike Budd plays the bass and as always adds a unique, slinky element. Thanks, Mike!

My pal Henry Smith from my old band The Strangers said the riff is “like a murky chainsaw right to the chest.” I might have to use that in the press kit, ha ha!

The album is going to be called “Across the Light” and will be released in spring, probably in May. We are still wrapping up one last tune and then we want to make sure we launch the thing right. This is shaping up to be something I will be very very proud of. Until then, enjoy “Show Me,” and let me know what you think!

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/73268342024-01-01T13:24:17-08:002024-01-13T09:45:28-08:00Happy New Year!
Just a quick post to say I am fired up for 2024. Lots of work behind the scenes from 2023 will come to fruition in 2024, including the new album. Just one more song to finish but the first single has been selected, artwork created, and 80 percent of the wheels are ready to get into motion. So, stand by and more to come, soon!

I am very thankful for the gift of music and for family, friends and fans who are always so encouraging and supportive. I am also thankful to JT at the Dublin Pub in Raleigh Hills, where I am excited to announce a continuation of my monthly acoustic nights, every third Thursday. These gigs give me so many opportunities, from trying out new songs, pulling old originals out of the cobwebs, keeping the fingers and voice nimble(ish) and of course connecting with folks!

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/72780262023-09-24T11:35:04-07:002023-12-27T08:23:43-08:00New Album Coming Early Next Year!
I hope everyone had a fab summer and as fall 2023 becomes official (yesterday!), it’s time for a quick update. There was good momentum over the summer on the new album – my fourth full-length release since 2010. It’s looking positive for a February 2024 release, as half the album is mixed and mastered, the artwork is done and all the other various bits and pieces that come into play – sequencing, duplication, promo, events, advance reviews, etc etc – are starting to take shape too. I will start to post updates and sneak peeks as things come together but remember I post more frequently to my social media handles on at Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Head to the photos page for more! Thanks as always for everyone’s support and I am stoked for the next few months and beyond as this new album is shaping up to be a real killer.
Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/71682092023-03-09T09:08:25-08:002023-09-18T14:38:21-07:00Surprise Release w/Rob Barteletti Available NOW!
I am pleased and proud to announce the immediate release of my second full album of instrumental music with my friend Rob Barteletti, who sadly passed away unexpectedly last September. To refresh, I met Rob in the 80s when he was an English teacher at my high school. We re-connected in Portland when both of us found our respective ways into town. Rob later moved to New Mexico and we stayed in touch. During our ‘stay home months’ of 2020-21, Rob got on a creative roll and we started working together virtually, culminating in last year’s New Worlds album and now, Between the Lines.

Although his passing was a total shock (he had just sent me a new song that morning…), Rob and I intended to complete this new album and he left me pretty much everything I needed to get it released. He had uploaded his final mixes to a Dropbox folder. He had shared his vision for the cover art and had chosen the name for the CD. And because he had shared early mixes of the material with his private mailing list, I have Rob’s own thoughts about every song, which I’ve pasted below.

I wish Rob was here to enjoy the response to the album. He was a creative, passionate, prolific and empathetic human and I miss him dearly. The least I can do, with the blessing of his family, is to make sure this music gets out into the world. So, please give Between the Lines a ‘virtual spin’ and while you are at it, a search for “Rob Barteletti” on your go-to music streaming service will pull up much of his work from over the years. I hope you enjoy it all. And please share if you are so inclined.

Paul

Between the Lines

Rob Barteletti and Paul Lesinski

These song notes are from Rob’s emails:

Serengeti - “Serengeti” is sort of a blues-jazz piece, with a little funk and Latin influence tossed in. Paul plays solo guitars and bass. He interpreted my original concept beautifully and made the song come alive. I’m in the background with the organ, drums, percussion, and rhythm guitar (using my MIDI keyboard and loops). Makes me think of listening to live performances by Dan Balmer and Tom Grant back in the early 1990s in Portland. It’s a song in two parts. I love the way it reflects the Serengeti with the long, lazy first part, like lions napping in the midday sun. Then we suddenly get the musical payoff (what Sting says is necessary for a “flagship” song) when the lions wake up and are off on the hunt. Those are the two images in my head when I was creating the song.

Funkyville - [This song] came to me quickly. We hope you like it — and, if you like funk, you might even love it! Paul and I had a lot of fun with this one. [Paul note: Rob’s wife told him “it reminds her of The Jazz Crusaders. It’s great funk!”]

Love Story - For lack of a better name, I’m calling this, for now, “Love Story.” It’s a sweet tune, but for now it’s just a template. Paul is awesome filling in for Mark Knopfler, who had a cold and couldn’t make it to the recording session! [Paul note – we finished it!]

Riding Tall (In The Saddle) - Changed the title (used to be “Riding High — didn’t want to give anyone the wrong impression:). Then after countless revisions, I finally sent Paul the version I thought was the one he would be able work with. Wrong. He made a valiant effort, but the basic structure and arrangement I had created for the song was all wrong. Fortunately, Paul had given me plenty of guitar (and bass) to work with. So I performed major surgery, — rearranging, editing, and mixing what had been a bit of a mess (my bad), and Paul’s guitar work shines again. This is the final result. Welcome to "RIDING TALL (IN THE SADDLE).”

Remembering Brubeck - I was listening to a Dave Brubeck and all-time jazz classic, “Take Five,” which he wrote in 5/4 time. I wanted to take my stab at that difficult time signature, so I composed ”Remembering Brubeck” with that in mind. I was also listening to renown vibraphone artist Gary Burton at the time, so I added some vibes to the song. The organ just found its way into the recording for a cameo appearance!

Just Around the Bend - Paul sent me an abundance of options, so after consulting with him, I did more editing and mixing and finally came up with this new version of “Just Around the Bend” featuring Paul on solo guitars and bass.

Cloak and Dagger - I call this instrumental piece “Cloak & Dagger” because it was inspired by the theme for an old private eye tv series — one of my all-time favorites — The Rockford Files

Between the Lines - I wanted to do something with a hip-hop beat, since I had never tried that before. I found some funky guitar loops to cut-and-paste and came up with this song.

La Puerta (Siempre Esta Abierta) - [Paul Note – this was the last song Rob and I worked on together. He sent me the final mix two days before he died. It seems fitting both musically and in the title he chose for it – Spanish for “the door is always open…” RIP Rob, my buddy…]

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/71363282023-01-10T22:58:15-08:002023-03-09T09:02:11-08:00National Anthem at the Portland Winterhawks
Wanted to post video of my performance of the National Anthem at the Portland Winterhawks hockey game in late December. As many of you know I’ve been honored to play the anthem for the Hillsboro Hops baseball team the last ten-ish years and just did it for the Portland Timbers2 soccer team last year.

But this was my first indoor anthem and I will say there is a difference! The Hawks play hockey in the Portland Veterans Memorial Coliseum, adjacent to the Moda Center arena. So many bands have played the coliseum from the Beatles in 65 to Van Halen in 78 to of course KISS on many tours. Knowing this, plus the rock and roll vibe of the Portland hockey experience in general led to a little extra something when I played (also a couple of little ‘extra’ flubs, but hey it’s rock and roll). It was really fun and I am eager to do it again February 4th!

The back office folks were amazingly well organized, friendly and overall super cool. Thanks and go Hawks!

My musical goals for the year include finishing two CDs – my second with Rob Barteletti (which was almost done when he sadly passed in September) and also my fourth full-length solo release, which is shaping up to be a pretty proggy affair.

In the meantime, the electric band has its first show since last May in a couple of weeks at the Dublin Pub (Saturday January 21) and we’ll be prepping for that between now and then.

Happy New Year!

Wound up watching the entire thing. If you watched any of it, drop me a comment! What did you think? What were the hits and misses?

For me it was mostly hits. Too many to list here but here are some:

The Hits:

-The smile on the James Gang drummer’s face their entire set. I can imagine the phone call “Hey man it’s Joe (Walsh). What’s up? So… you wanna put the band back together and play for 88,000 people at Wembley?” Um….. sure, ok, yeah let me check my calendar…

-Supergrass - who the hell are these guys? Really good band!

-Of course Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush playing again (2nd time so far) without Neil Peart. Yeah, I cried.

-Wolfgang Van Halen playing deep Van Halen cut On Fire (and Hot For Teacher) with a permagrin like his dad, another musician lost who deserves tribute. Wolfie has been pretty outspoken about NOT playing VH songs in general so this was so cool. I had chills, actually…

-Chrissie Hynde and original Pretenders drummer Martin Chambers kicking ass through two of their punkiest tunes. She has not lost one iota of her vocal power.

-I thought Ke$ha doing the T Rex song was pretty damn good and who would have ever predicted she’d be asked to play? Dave pulled her right out of the “Where Are They Now” file!

-Stewart Copeland from the Police, he’s still got it and I wanted 1-2 more from him!

-Everything the Foo Fighters touched from their backing up many of the night’s artists to their own incendiary and emotional set, and of course Dave, poor mourning Dave who barely made it through some of these songs after losing his best friend and musical soulmate. Sigh….

-Taylor Hawkins’ 16-year-old son stealing the show with his pummeling drumming on There Goes My Hero. Tears…

The Meh:

-Paul McCartney. Song choices were ‘meh’ and both were way out of his current vocal range. Don’t hate me!

-Them Crooked Vultures. One of my favorite all time shows was seeing these guys in 2009 at the Roseland Theater in Portland. I mean any band with John Paul Jones from Zeppelin is going to be amazing! But their song selection was not my favorite.

-Queen. OK Brian May doing Love of My Life solo with 88,000 fans singing with cell phone lights going was one of the coolest things ever but I guess I’ve just seen them reformed enough over the years for their set overall to not do a ton for me. The songs were predictable except for I’m In Love With My Car. Them following Rush was a personal emotional down step, too, which I am sure impacted my opinion.

-The Jeff Buckley songs. Don’t kill me!! Grohl’s daughter is a tremendous singer and her rendition of Valerie later on was super strong. It’s just hard to do Buckley. It was a ballsy choice but I wasn’t a huge fan.

Other observations:

-This was a really multi generational thing. Grohl’s daughter and Hawkins son, plus the ‘drum off’ kid (Nandi Bushell) are a new generation of talented mo-fo’s! Queen drummer Roger Taylor’s son as well, but he’s already well established as is Wolfgang VH but I still think of them as ‘new guard.’

-Geddy and Alex from Rush need to play more with Omar Hakim on drums. That really worked for me.

-Rock is alive and well across all of these generations. Six hours of live music with no backing tracks or lip syncing? More of that please!

I know I’m skipping a lot but it’s late. What did you think of the tribute!?

It’s quite a thing and I am not sure when we’ll do it again. We are celebrating 25 years by performing two Floyd albums – The Dark Side of the Moon and Animals, plus a host of other songs.
Musings from a Floydian Slip – 25 Years In A Tribute Band

When I first heard The Dark Side of the Moon, I didn’t like it. Between the long intro sound collage before Breathe, the lengthy synth pulse of On The Run and the clocks/chiming/ticking intro to Time, I thought to myself, “Where are the SONGS?” Of course, I was in high school, and my jam was prog and heavy rock. Stuff like Yes, Rush, Maiden. Complex songs with a LOT of notes.

But it didn’t take long for me to appreciate the space (shock!) Floyd left in between its notes, the choices of instrumentation, mix, the ethereal David Gilmour leads, the jazzy Rick Wright piano noodlings, and soon after — the lyrics, oh man the Roger Waters lyrics really got to me. I was hooked….

Rob now lives in New Mexico but spent quite a few years in Portland where he wrote and recorded several CDs with local musicians including Nick Peets, Storm Large, Dan Decker and my old Strangers partner Bart Ferguson. Even after he moved, we kept in touch over email.

During our ‘stay home months’ the last year, Rob got on a creative roll and started sending songs one-off to his friends. The styles ranged from jazz to ambient to sambas, blues and everything in between. Some were instrumentals, some had singing. One day, one of them struck me and I wrote to Rob. The ensuing conversation over the next few months could be summarized this way:

Paul: “Hey Rob would you be cool if I laid down a lead on this track?”

Rob: “Sure!”

Paul (3.5 weeks later): “Hey I am still going to lay that lead down. Sorry!”

Rob: “It’s OK.”

Paul: “Here you go – let me know what you think!”

Rob: “I really like this! Thanks! Here is another song if you want to check it out”

Paul: “This is great! I kind of got on a roll and added bass and acoustic guitar”

Rob: “Great! Hey, I got inspired, here is another song. And here is one I did a few years ago. What might you be able to add to it…?”

--Repeat process for about a dozen more songs across about six months—

Rob: “Hey you know, we have 10 instrumentals done. Want to put out an album?”

Paul: “Wow, hell yes! What should we call it…?”

You get the idea. So what we have is ten of Rob’s songs with my embellishments. Much like my other Strangers partner in crime Allen Bush who recorded an entire album using Apple’s Garage Band software (called Juiced), Rob is a Garage Band power user. I am consistently blown away with what is able to put together using this software. I took his tracks, popped them into Digital Performer, which is my recording software, laid down tracks, sent them to Rob and he edited at will, sometimes asking me for a different take or approach and other times, we’d be done with one go at it. I tried to give him a different palate of colors to work with, and he gave me quite a variety of styles of music to tackle. We both had a blast, and I am really proud of what we put together.

You can find the album on AppleMusic, Amazon Music, Spotify, YouTube, and at my Bandcamp site. I hope you enjoy it – it’s certainly different from anything I’ve ever released to the public. Do let me know what you think!
Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/69159822022-03-07T10:19:52-08:002023-12-10T10:34:31-08:00Post-Mort from At The Garages Show
It’s funny, I usually video every show. Take photos, post stuff. On Friday night I did none of that, and I didn’t even realize it until the weekend. Too bad because it was a real barn burner. Guess it’ll have to live in memory (and maybe that’s not a bad thing). The photo below was sent by a friend...

Big thanks to At The Garages Satellite Pub, Steve Griffiths on sound, Kent and Jami and especially everyone who showed up. It exceeded my expectations and I guess we all needed to get out and kick some jams out. It was super cool to have people dance to our original music. That doesn't happen a ton.

And it was quite a kick to have drummer Dave’s nephew join us on bass for a song (What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding), and his sister and our great musical partner Carla Kendall Bray join us to sing an old colorfield song (Say It In A Whisper). That was a time machine moment. Wow! So… I just want to say thanks to all who had a hand in last night and dang I needed that…

This is our first time onstage in front of folks in more than three years. I cannot say enough good things about this venue. It’s the new location for the Garages that used to be in Beaverton and the owners spared no expense on making this a top notch club. This will be a destination for touring and local bands, hands-down. If you are local, come support us and the venue. Tickets are on sale at the venue site. Thanks!

It also made us realize that the new dates - in April 2022 - are a mere month away from the 25th anniversary of our very first show! So these April dates (Saturday April 2 at McDonald Theatre in Eugene, Oregon and Saturday April 9, 2022 at Revolution Hall in Portland) will be balls-out celebrations of our 25th year. Tickets are available at the venue websites. Hope to see you there!

On the music front, things weren’t all bad in 2021. I was able to re-start the monthly acoustic gigs at the Dublin Pub in Portland, and the Paul Lesinski Band did its fourth pandemic-era livestreamed gig in March with Northwest Talent Spotlight. I also was able to do an acoustic livestream with NWTS before the show went on hiatus. There are some songs posted on the Paul Lesinski Music YouTube page for your perusal.

But you know, we aren’t done with this stupid pandemic. The Floydian Slips shows that were booked for early January have been moved to Saturday April 2 (McDonald Theater in Eugene) and Saturday April 9 (Revolution Hall in Portland). Let’s hope things settle down by then and we can celebrate proper. Interestingly, May 2022 is the 25th anniversary of the Slips’ first gig, a one-off project to play Dark Side of the Moon all the way through, live. Little did we know we’d be still kicking it 25 years later!

I am thankful for my family, my health and my ability to play music. I also thank you for your continued support. So as we step into 2022, I wish you all the best. Here’s to health, happiness and chasing what truly fills you.

See you around!

Portland, Ore. – October 15, 2021 – The northwest musical collective Floydian Slips will perform Pink Floyd songs, including two full albums, in all ages show at Revolution Hall Friday, January 7, 2022, at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. doors). The band will perform Pink Floyd’s seminal Dark Side of the Moon and Animals albums in their entirety. Minors are welcome with a parent or guardian.

Floydian Slips co-founder Paul Lesinski said, “We live in strange times and the individual has great power. Through social media, one person can start a movement. To quote a line from Animals, people are breaking away from the pack. They are taking a stand and using social platforms to share and amplify it. But when misused, this power causes great chaos and can be used to manipulate. In this context, the madness, money, and power presented in Dark Side and especially Animals is very relevant today.”

After more than 23 years of rare and singular performances, the Pacific Northwest musical collective known as Floydian Slips continues to tear through the discography of classic Pink Floyd, performing note-perfect renditions of many of the iconic hits and deep cuts composed by the British-rock band.

The band is a collective of mainstay Portland and Eugene musicians, including Nicole Campbell (vocals); Ehren Ebbage (vocals, guitar); Ned Failing (drums, percussion); Sean Flannery, (saxophone, keyboards) Dustin Lanker (keyboards, vocals);

Paul Lesinski (vocals, guitar); Brendan Relaford (bass); Rich Sellars (vocals, drums, percussion); and Al Toribio (lead guitar, vocals).

Each Floydian Slips concert is different, with unique set lists and special effects, and the band moves from “greatest hits” tributes to full-length album performances depending on its collective mood.

“Getting this group together to perform is a blast,” said founding member Brendan Relaford. “Since we don’t tour, and all the members of the Slips have other bands and careers in and out of the music business, when we gather to play this timeless music, it’s a joyous occasion and that vibe is passed to our audience.”

Born from a one-off idea to play through Pink Floyd’s classic The Dark Side Of The Moon album during a single concert in 1997, the eight-piece band has grown into a musical ensemble on a 24-year run that captures the essence of Pink Floyd, with emphatic tone placed just right where it belongs in each song.

With spot-on vocals, perfect guitar solos, epic keyboard layers and Floydian-laid-back drum and bass grooves, the real Pink Floyd experience is enhanced during Floydian Slips concerts with unique visuals specifically designed for each show.

The band approaches the classic music with all the curmudgeon, stoniness, swagger and attitude of the men who wrote the songs, and never fails to impress the naysayers while delivering the specific notes in the right places to please any Pink Floyd fanatic.

Having performed The Dark Side Of The Moon, Animals and The Wall in their entirety many times, set lists have included most of the Wish You Were Here album, as well as select material from A Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle, and A Momentary Lapse of Reason, all played with great care to reproduce the original sounds and emotions of The Floyd as closely as possible.
Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/65913432021-04-01T14:07:46-07:002023-12-10T08:31:57-08:00Acoustic version of Rush Song "The Garden"
I played a virtual acoustic gig recently with Northwest Talent Spotlight (see the whole thing here). I told the story of how the 2020 pandemic shite show really started for me when Neil Peart passed away that January. So it was fitting to learn and perform what turned out to be the last song on the last album for Rush. Called 'The Garden,' it fittingly addresses life and gained experience, and what is really important. See what you think:

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/65108752020-12-31T09:01:12-08:002023-12-10T08:42:56-08:00See ya 2020!
To say “It was quite a year” understates the uniqueness of 2020 and also short-changes both the highs and lows. For many, there were countless physical, emotional and economic hardships. Indeed, so many of our lives changed, forever. Losses have been incurred that we won’t get back.

Focusing on the positive, and what I am thankful for, it’s my immediate family’s health and general happiness. We grew closer this year because, well, we had to. We were together a lot, and sorted out how to make it work, and how to even make it fun. I’m not wishing another 2020 on anyone but that was a nice by-product.

On the music front, a high was managing to get a CD released. Even though it was written and mostly recorded before January 2020, I felt that it was timely and relevant to 2020’s political and societal landscape. So I am glad I got it out. This gave me an excuse to safely get the band back together and play some virtual venues that did not exist last year, namely the PDX Couch Tour and Northwest Talent Spotlight, run by Brian J. Straus and Bobby Palotta, respectively. These shows were ‘attended’ by so many who frankly would never be able to see us in person given their location and the fact that I don’t tour, even when there is no pandemic. I also did one acoustic show behind a sheet of plastic at the Dublin Pub before Portland locked everything down again. It almost felt normal. Thanks to JT for that!

I also met and worked with some great people who started their own media outlets (or leaned into their existing ones), like drummer Kevin Rankin who started up a videocast called All Access Live and interviewed me and my Floydian Slips partner Ned Failing, or Tim and Naomi Bunch, who interviewed me for their fantastic podcast The Audio Brew, or my buddy Eric Gessner who keeps having me on his Now and Then radio show on KMUZ FM.

Eric and I did a three-hour tribute on KMUZ to Neil Peart in January (Neil’s dying in January was an early point where this year turned to shit and didn’t turn back), and ran an hour-long special on the new CD this month. Radio was friendly in general and I was proud to be added to the rotations of the Portland Radio Project, Shady Pines Radio, Radio Hot Tub, and NWCZ by old friend and supporter Darryl Fortune.

So there was some music and some community! And I got to PLAY, virtually and also in person 6+ feet apart with my musical partners Dave Kendall and Mike Budd, without whom…! Thanks guys, as always!

For 2021, I remain thankful and hopeful. As this year turns to next year, I wish all of you safety, warmth and happiness and hope that whatever your jam is, that you are doing it. See you on the other side!

This song, called Say What You Will, is the most political song I have ever written. It simply asks the question, "are you happy with how you voted in 2016?" The song is, of course, from the new CD called What You Hold Near, which you can find on the music section of this page and iTunes/Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon.

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/63863112020-07-17T07:26:38-07:002023-12-10T08:32:04-08:00Announcing New CD - What You Hold Near!
I am pleased to announce the official release of my third full-length CD, a work which I am calling “What You Hold Near.” You can get it right now at my Bandcamp page, and you can purchase or stream it from iTunes/Apple Music, Spotify and Amazon. There are YouTube promotional videos for three of the songs here, here and here.

So…let’s face it -- we are living through unsettling times. And even though these songs were written and recorded over the past two years, I think they resonate with what is happening today in the world. I chose to call the album What You Hold Near because at the core of things, we draw strength from our families, friends and those people and things we choose to hold nearest to our hearts.

In difficult times, music has always powered me through. I hope it is not too presumptuous to suggest that these songs can offer opportunities to escape, reflect or to just rock out to.

Thanks to my bandmates David Kendall and Mike Budd, who brought these songs to life. Thanks to those who I hold near, especially my beautiful wife and children. May we all emerge on the other side stronger and wiser.

As always, thank you for your support. Stay safe!

The song, called Forgotten Be Found, was written last year in reaction to things going on in the U.S. (and frankly the rest of the world too). The media echo chamber; the notion of being forgotten and then having a chance to undo that through action; the choices we make every day to lean into what we care about most. The CD embodies all of this and I am excited to unveil it soon. In the meantime, enjoy the below. So far I've been getting good feedback. Thanks!

The three songs on this release have been in my live sets for the last couple of years, and I felt that they needed their own spotlight, as Mike Budd (bass) and David Kendall (drums) bring them to new heights as usual. I have a boatload of material for the next full length CD, and I decided I didn't want these 'older' songs to sit alongside the new stuff. So here you go -- Old Becomes New! We'll celebrate with a show at the trusty Dublin Pub on Friday April 19. This is our 22nd year of doing these shows. Unlike other newer tribute bands, we only play 2-3 times a year and therefore it's always a really big deal with lasers, lights, two full sets of Floyd plus encore. Great stuff. Below is video from New Year's Eve 2014. You can get tickets to the Portland show here and the Eugene show here.

But it was anything but. I got on a bit of a writing roll and every time I went to Studio Dave, we laid down backing tracks to one or two new tunes. So come 2019, I have a backlog and am starting to peck away at finishing things. Spent some time last week laying down acoustic guitar on a song called What You Hold Near. I used my 1966 Gibson J-50 that I have had since age 11, and a 10-string Michael Kelly guitar that Dave had. More details to come!

The Dublin was the first venue I played in Portland oh some 30-ish years ago. It became a second home and my band The Strangers played dozens of times there in the early 90s. I have gone back over the years for solo gigs, reunions and power trio shows. It'll be great to hit the stage again, and at a nice early 7 a.m. start! Thursday March 21. See you there!
Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/39865212016-01-13T08:38:11-08:002023-12-10T08:27:11-08:00RIP David Bowie
Back in the 90s I played some acoustic shows in Eugene, Oregon at a place called Good Times. I stumbled on this last night from 1996, played on a nylon string I wish I still had (never sella guitar). The more I dig into people's comments about Bowie's passing the more I reminded how fuckin amazing he was. Ugh...

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/39390232015-11-28T09:38:23-08:002023-12-10T08:51:11-08:00Happy Winter!Hey everyone! Been a little busy on the home front, yet still little musical ideas pop up every now and again and thanks to the beauty of technology I am able to capture and develop them quickly. Hoping for some new music to play for you (and hopefully record) in the coming months. Also happy to have booked March 12 at the White Eagle, details forthcoming. Until then, have a superb holiday season. I'll leave you with the below jam for the 10/10/15 show at The Gemini. Enjoy!
Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/38525242015-09-12T22:07:51-07:002015-09-12T22:07:51-07:00Summer's Over!Had a great summer. Pretty quiet on the music front except for having the honor of busting out the national anthem at the Hillsboro Hops ball game with my Floydian Slips band mate Al Toribio (video below). Now getting fired up to do some jamming with the guys this month in prep for our next show, at The Gemini in Lake Oswego October 10. More to come on that. For now, enjoy the start of Fall and the national anthem below! :)

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/37567972015-06-26T22:21:06-07:002017-01-18T07:30:20-08:00CD Release Wrap-Up!Well, it’s been a couple of months since the CD release shows wrapped. I got busy getting back to regular life as a civilian and frankly was ready for a little break from all of the activity! But it was an awesome few months and the whole run of shows frankly far exceeded my expectations.

We played six gigs in three states, and I was proud to share stages with of course my core guys Mike and Dave but also our musical brothers and sisters Nicole Campbell, Al Toribio, Mike Walker, John Shipe, Allen Bush, Sean Flannery, and my old high school band buddies together for the first time since 1986 Kevin Brown, Tom Gutierrez, Eric Johnson and Tom Luce.

I did a good amount of promo too, appearing on radio shows on KMUZ, NWCZ, KRVM, KOOL, KZEL, and was featured on the local music spotlight on Portland’s KINK Radio (twice!).

Most importantly, the music has been received very well, validating what I suspected, which was that the CD turned out right. The recorded songs are really resonating with people, and that of course is the most satisfying out of all of this. The live versions smoked and by that last gig in the Bay Area, the band was wicked tight.

I’m recharging the batteries right now but the next gig is in October and I hope to have some new songs to debut! Onward!

Paul, with Dave and Mike

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/36296372015-03-28T14:58:32-07:002017-01-18T07:30:20-08:00New Show Announced - Bay Area on April 18We blew it out in Portland, Seattle and Eugene. Now, I am really excited to announce this final CD release show in the Bay Area for a couple of reasons. First, I get to share the bill with my friend Tom Luce. Tom and I were in one of my very first bands, and certainly one of the best, way back in high school. The band was called Osiris and we rocked. Yeah we were teenagers and therefore unpolished and our musical skills were, how we say, emerging...

But that was a lot of the magic and beauty of it. Our love of heavy rock and prog led to some epic jams and even a tape of original material. I always wished we could have pushed on past high school but you know how it goes. I and the other guys in the band have stayed close but have not played all together since 1986. Yeah you read that right. Tom has gone on to have an amazing and admirable musical career that unfolds to this day. Go to www.luceband.com for the whole story. So I am honored and totally stoked to be sharing the stage with him.

And of course, I have a long history with the Bay Area, having grown up in Cupertino and attended high school and college there, plus the many work friends and colleagues I have to this day. I am so pumped to come back home and do some damage!

We'll play an hour, Tom will play an hour and change, and then maybe, just maybe, Osiris will rise from the dead for the first time since 1986. Gotta be there to know for sure...

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/35706112015-03-02T22:14:36-08:002015-03-02T22:14:36-08:00Seattle was Super Sized!Wow, what a fun night in Seattle. The band trucked North to the land o'grunge to play a fantastic venue - the High Dive, a crow's flight from the Space Needle and Hendrix Experience center. Everything about the place was top-notch. Super friendly staff, great sound engineer, bitchin' stage and free PBR - what more can a guy ask for?

We shared the bill with two excellent Seattle bands - Swords for Arrows, and Explone. Did a short and sweet 45 minute set in the middle slot and pow-wowed with long lost friends and family before and after. Hope to get back up there sooner rather than later. We were well-recieved so hoping it'll happen. Here is a tune from the gig:

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/35418102015-02-18T22:12:55-08:002015-02-18T22:12:55-08:00Portland CD Release Show Rocked! It's taken me some time to come down from the phenomenal CD release show on January 31 at the Gemini in Lake Oswego. Attendance and enthusiasm far exceeded my expectations and the BAND - well, the guys played great. Dave and Mike killed it but also Mike Walker, who played most of the night on keys and then of course guests Al Toribio, Bart Ferguson and Carla Kendall Bray.

It's gotten me fired up for the Seattle and Eugene shows, coming right up. And soon I think I'll be able to announce a Bay Area show, so stand by there. Exciting stuff all around. But hey don't take my word for it, here is our version of the Jerry Joseph song Hearts Gone Blind from the Portland show. Regarding the album, the Oregon Music News put it like this:

Hearts & Reason runs the gamut from jazz-fusion to groove oriented, driving hard rock to edgy pop to intricate progressive influenced rock. There’s no question that there’s something in Hearts & Reason for all musical palates…Lesinski proves that there are bands and artists right outside your door that you have yet to discover. Do yourself a favor and pick up the album or better yet make it out to show your support and buy the album at the venue.

Various talented musicians joined me on this CD, most notably David Kendall (drums/vocals) and Mike Budd (bass), who have played with me the last 10 years and are on every track. Dave doubled as co-producer and we recorded it in his studio. It's for sure one of my favorites on the CD. The two guests I had play really up-leveled the whole thing. My fellow Floydian Slip Asher Fulero laid down a gorgeous piano part and Sean Nobel Flannery delivered a super tasty pair of solos. I put the video together from an old film from my mom's side of the family of a gathering in 1940 and somehow the people in the film matched the music perfetcly. I tried to channel my best Mick Taylor on the outro guitar solo! See what you think:
Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/34619052015-01-11T21:22:46-08:002017-01-18T07:30:20-08:00Floydian Week Post-MortThe last 10 days have been amazing. First, my Pink Floyd tribute band The Floydian Slips rocked in the New Year in style, playing our usual Eugene, Oregon haunt, The McDonald Theater to more than 1,000 Floyd fans. The band played well and the lights and stage look was off the hook due to the hard work of our bass player Brendan Relaford and Jason Way who is an amazing video and stage designer (and executer).

Then we brought the show to Portland for the first time since the late Oughts, and rocked two nights at the Aladdin Theater to capacity attendance. The lights and sound were way more off the hook than I had anticipated, and the band rose to it, playing all of the Animals album on Friday and Dark Side of the Moon on Saturday.

The band is made up of seasoned local musicians, many of whom play music for a living. It's always a treat to get together as we only play a couple of times a year. After playing in this project for almost 17 years, we are also a bit critical of what a 'perfect' show is, but we all felt that Saturday was pretty much one of the best shows we've done. So, there's that!

Now that I bid the Floyd band goodbye for a while, I can put focus on the CD release in Portland in January, Seattle in February and Eugene in March. But in the meantime, here are a few good shots from the weekend. Photos are by Jason Way and the lights were done by Lights Up Loud, a local amazing company.

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/34410452014-12-27T00:58:01-08:002014-12-27T00:59:26-08:00Next CD Tune - ReasonPretty happy with how this one turned out. It's a song I've had around for probably 20 years. Played it on the road with The Strangers in the early 90s, again in Isor Wallobee in the mid 90s (it even shows up on the CD we did, available on iTunes!) and brought it back a few years ago with the new band. I liked the energy of the new version so much I decided to record it again. Really captured the live feel in the studio, which is not easy, and I think the center section is super fun. I even used a theremin there!

Lyrically it's always been relevant. People spend years waiting for things to happen or for life to start and in the meantime, it's passing right by! It was inspired by a conversation I had with a guy in Seattle who came to a Strangers show and was so excited that I was doing music for a living. He seemed to be in a bit of a career rut. Of course I went through that too, just later on. The song is a bit of a rallying cry to help us all get over it and start living.

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/34235062014-12-20T18:36:33-08:002014-12-20T18:38:35-08:00Next Song from New CD - Summertime in DesertlandHere is track 2 from the upcoming CD. Called "Summertime in Desertland" it is heavily inspired by the show Breaking Bad. I was binge watching and woke up the next morning with the imagery in my head. The lyrics came out of nowhere in that weird waking state, and I sat down and put music to it right away. The song came quickly and developed into a pretty good jam live when the band started to play it live.

For the recording, it was challenging to capture the energy of the live performances in a studio setting but I think we did it. It was especially fun to play the keyboard part, which I ended up liking so much I turned the guitars down and let the keyboards take a larger role. It made the song feel more like an old Doors tune or something.

The guitar solo section is one of my favorites I have ever recorded.

Here is the first one, called 'Silver." This one is dedicated to my wife, as the tune is about growing old together! This is the one song on the CD where I wrote the words but not the music - it was drummer Dave's music, so the chords are very unusual (he admittedly is not a guitar player). But it for sure gave the tune a feel I never would have come up with. The epic synth solo at the tail end is Portland's Asher Fulero, who also plays keyboards in my Pink Floyd tribute band, The Floydian Slips and is a seriously talented mo-fo. Look him up. Enjoy the song. Why the street sign?

Folks who know my career with The Strangers may recall the use of a street sign on the inside of our Life on the Road CD, which looked like this:

We saw this sign on an off-ramp in Longview, Washington and thought it was particularly funky for a highway sign. It also represented how we felt a lot of the time, which was slightly askew and out of control.

But it was an exciting time. The future was uncertain yet full of opportunity and we were game to ride it out. Gig to gig, song to song, per diem food ration to per diem food ration. We evolved from a naïve acoustic bar band to a touring rock and roll machine with our own bus (we actually went through two of them, plus a van and trailer), ultimately playing more than 900 shows in five years across 17 states in the west coast, Rockies, Midwest and Canada.

Ah but we grow older. We get married. We have kids, and things change! Instead of being solely focused on one thing – in my case moving the band forward step by step – we juggle a lot of things.

That brings us to the new CD. As I was putting the songs together, I realized that a lot of them look at the push and pull between passions and responsibilities. The things we do to nurture our minds and bodies, versus the things we do to make sure the lights and heat stay on.

Play ball with the boy, or get that yardwork done? Have a drink with my sweetie, or go through the stack of mail and pay some bills (but who am I kidding? My sweetie handles the bills)? There’s room for all of it, and how we navigate it is our push and pull between Hearts & Reason. And the seesaw street sign photo seemed to illustrate it perfectly. So there ya go.

I’m really excited about this CD and will post a few more times about the writing and recording process. But for now I’ll leave you with the art. Enjoy!

Do you have a Hearts and Reason story? I have to say, I am equally excited. I know it's all instrumental, with only one tune with lyrics. I know it's based on jams that happened during the writing of The Division Bell. Luckily I love the playing on The Division Bell.

Regardless, the last 'new' (to me) Floyd album I listened to was 'More,' a soundtrack the Floyd contributed to in 1969. It was like when I listened to Rush 'Hemispheres' in high school after going through the rest of the band's back catalogue, and there was no more 'old' Rush for me to discover. I was truly bummed! The good news was, Rush is still putting out great music at a regular clip. But not Floyd.

For The Endless River, I am holding out until I make it to the music store to get the physical CD. It will certainly be a fun experience, and is getting me even more fired up for the Slips shows on New Years and in January in Portland. Onward!Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/32502242014-10-25T10:06:11-07:002023-12-10T08:29:08-08:00RIP Jack BruceAll of my musical heroes are getting older and it's only natural that they are going to start to drop off. Dio was a big one for me. He seemed totally immortal. So this morning I see that Jack Bruce has passed at age 71. He was such a groundbreaking bassist, influencing the likes of Geddy Lee, John Enwistle and Chris Squire. He still played amazingly in Cream's 2005 reunion, as evidenced below. RIP Jack Bruce.

Paul Lesinskitag:paullesinski.com,2005:Post/31974072014-09-21T21:44:37-07:002023-12-10T08:30:54-08:00Welcome to the new website! After using Facebook, YouTube and in the good old days, MySpace, I finally realized I needed a web destination that I could control regardless of the parent company's whims and desire for experimentation and jones for constant change. So, here it is! I will still post frequently at my social channels, and you can find easy links to them on the upper right of this front page. But for an easy way to get your fix of all things Paul, this is the place. Enjoy!Paul Lesinski
