Lyrics

The clouds broke away, the beginning of day
And time began to drag
Turned from the door, didn’t care anymore
Bent and picked up my bag
Headed down the road, just toting that load
Better running away than dead
Thought when will it end, ‘round which hidden bend
And where will I find my bed?

Suits and shoes and big city blues
Businessmen telling lies
Hit on by whores and drunks in their doors
Emptiness in their eyes
Lost half of my gear to a bum with a beer
When I stumbled right into a fight
Well, the city’s big when you don’t have a thing
And you pray to break the night

After a couple of days of black city haze
My spirits began to depress
What did I leave, I cannot believe
I’m stuck here in this mess
But then I woman I saw, she was against the law
With a body and eyes as wide
Yeah it became a joke, breathing her cigarette smoke
Was the closet to me getting inside, far and wide

There she stood like a dream
Green eyes bright like a queen
Led me down to paradise
Quenched my thirst cool and nice
Thought she’d always be my soul
Rescue me and make me whole
Then got bored and kicked me out
Took my wind so I couldn’t shout – what’s this all about?

Well I swore I’d get some strange revenge
Though her face I’d never see
And the human race is gonna suffer for this
Because happy I’ll never be
But then you gotta cool down, get your head off the ground
On the road you gotta carry on
But then being alive and trying to survive
Is a game that I’d never won

The clouds broke away, the beginning of day
And time began to drag
Turned from the door, didn’t care anymore
Bent and picked up my bag
Headed down the road, just toting that load
Better running away than dead
Thought when will it end, ‘round which hidden bend
And where will I find my bed?
